In this course students in grade 5/6 will look at text-based writing and reading comprehension lessons that will help students improve their reading and writing skills in the first half of the course  followed by Poetry in the second half of the course. 

Part 1:

Nonfiction genre studies include expository nonfiction, persuasive nonfiction, narrative nonfiction, and descriptive nonfiction which will look at:

  • Main Ideas and Details

  • Text Features and Visual Information

  • Description

  • Cause and Effect

  • Compare and Contrast

  • Sequence

  • Problem and Solution

  • Predict

  • Vocabulary

  • Summarize

  • Fact and Opinion

  • Make Inferences

  • Author's Purpose

Part 2:

In the second half of the course students will look at different poem selections organized around these engaging themes:

  • Generations & Legacies

  • Seasons of Life

  •  Outside My Window

  •  War & Peace

Item content covers: literal comprehension, sequence, word meaning, context clues & inferences, main idea and details.

In short stories, we learned how to identify different parts of a story and the themes in the story. I enjoyed reading the short stories and found them quite interesting. In novel studies, I enjoyed reading the books and afterward having debates about topics in the book. 

It was really fun when we did impromptu debates because we learned how to prepare a small speech on any topic in just a few minutes.
