Literacy Essentials: Grammar, Comprehension, and Composition Course

Two classes each week - Tuesdays & Wednesdays :  10- 10:45am

Prerequisite: One Prep4Nine Grade 7/8 Language Arts Program Course- Novel Study, Essay Writing, Poetry, Reading Comprehension or Grammar ( Language Fundamentals) is needed. Please contact us if you require and exception.

Dear Parents,

I am delighted to welcome you to our Reading and Writing Combined Literacy Course for Junior/Senior Middle School Students.

I want to take a moment to share something important about the heart of this course. While it is designed to strengthen key academic skills in reading and writing, it is about so much more than academics.

As a literacy teacher of 20 years experience and a homeschool mother of 3 now grown-up children, I am compelled to think beyond producing better students. This course is designed to help your child develop skills to pave their way through life. 

Through carefully chosen texts and meaningful discussions, students will explore big questions: 

Why do we read? What do you do when you don't know what to do? How do you stay true to yourself? These are not just essay topics. They are life questions, and learning to think deeply about them is one of the most valuable things a young person can do.

Yes, the above discourse  might seem melodramatic, but in my experience, a literacy classroom becomes something more than a place to learn skills. Through our texts and discussions, my students and I enter a kind of safe zone where questions about history, culture, identity, and life can be explored openly and without judgment.

What Students will Learn

Since students arrive with at least one strand already introduced, this Reading and Writing Combined Literacy Course for Senior Middle School Students can:

• Move efficiently through foundational review and dedicate the majority of lesson time to application and complexity  with a clear focus on planning, drafting, and refining essays and open-ended questions that  reflect  deep and genuine understanding of the text and the ideas it raises

• Engage students in literary discussion and analysis with confidence, encouraging them to move beyond surface-level comprehension toward interpretation, evaluation, and evidence-based argument

What is taught in this course?

This course is designed to teach 3 main strands:

1. Language Fundamentals (Grammar)

2. Reading Comprehension (Fiction and Nonfiction)

3. Essay Writing

Each unit is built around 2 anchor texts. All 3 strands, Language Fundamentals, Reading Comprehension, and Writing, are taught through the same texts rather than in isolation in a span of 12 weeks.

Sept. 1st:  50% refund

After the first class:  50% credit or 25% refund
