Course Structure at a Glance

Junior Middle School-Grade 6/7 (11 to 13 years)

Reading & Writing Combined Course

Two classes each week - Tuesday and Wednesday :  10- 10:45am
3 Units | 12 Weeks | 24 Lessons | 18 Hours

Prerequisite: One Prep4Nine Grade 5/6 Language Arts Program Course- Novel Study, Paragraph Writing, Poetry, Reading Comprehension or Grammar ( Language Fundamentals) is needed. Please contact us if you require and exception. 

What is taught in this course?

This course is designed to teach 3 main strands:

1. Language Fundamentals (Grammar & Vocabulary)

2. Reading Comprehension (Fiction and Nonfiction)

3. Paragraph Writing

Each unit is built around 2 anchor texts. All 3 strands, Language Fundamentals, Reading Comprehension, and Paragraph Writing, are taught through the same texts rather than in isolation in a span of 12 weeks.

Please note that this course is also suitable for students who are currently in grade 7 but have missed learning  the key concepts due to other activities including sports and religious studies.

What Students will Learn

Since students arrive with at least one strand already introduced, this Literacy Course for Junior Middle School Students can:

• build on rather than start from scratch in each strand

• help students learn grammar  in context  through sentences and structures in the anchor  texts

• move faster through basics, and spend more time on application and complexity, such as writing paragraph types (sequence, descriptive, narrative)

• engage students in  literary discussion and analysis with  confidence

• provide more practice with  answering open-ended questions with emphasis on textual evidence
