Paragraph Writing (Grades 5/6)
Writing strong, expressive paragraphs is one of the most important skills students develop in upper elementary — yet it can also be one of the trickiest. Crafting clear sentences is challenging on its own, and turning those sentences into a well‑organized, meaningful paragraph takes practice, structure, and the right tools.
This 12‑week course gives students exactly that. Through guided lessons, writing activities, and step‑by‑step strategies, students will learn how to turn their ideas into confident, polished writing. By the end of the course, they’ll be able to build paragraphs that are clear, detailed, and engaging.
What Students Will Learn
Parts of a Paragraph: Students identify and understand the building blocks of a strong paragraph.
Crafting a Topic Sentence: They learn how to introduce a main idea clearly and effectively.
Adding Supporting Details: Students practice expanding their ideas with meaningful, specific details.
Writing a Concluding Sentence: They learn how to wrap up their thoughts in a way that feels complete.
Using Transition Words: Students explore how transitions improve flow and make writing smoother.
Four Types of Paragraphs: Students will write Narrative, Descriptive, Expository, and Opinion paragraphs, each with its own purpose and structure.

In short stories, we learned how to identify different parts of a story and the themes in the story. I enjoyed reading the short stories and found them quite interesting. In novel studies, I enjoyed reading the books and afterward having debates about topics in the book.
It was really fun when we did impromptu debates because we learned how to prepare a small speech on any topic in just a few minutes.
