Poetry Grade 1/2
A Grade 1–2 poetry course is more than an introduction to rhymes — it’s an early doorway into imagination, language confidence, and joyful self‑expression. At this age, students are naturally curious and playful with words. Poetry harnesses that energy and turns it into meaningful learning that strengthens reading, creativity, and communication.
Why Poetry Matters for Young Learners
Language Confidence — Poetry exposes students to rich vocabulary, simple structures, and memorable patterns. This helps early readers build fluency and recognize how words work together.
Creative Play — Young children love rhythm, repetition, and silly sounds. Poetry encourages them to experiment with language, unlocking imagination and building a lifelong love of reading.
Early Critical Thinking — Even simple poems invite students to notice details, make connections, and interpret meaning — foundational skills for all future learning.
Sensory Awareness — Poetry helps students tune into the world around them. They learn to describe what they see, hear, feel, taste, and smell, strengthening descriptive writing and observation skills.
Emotional Expression — Poetry gives young learners a safe, fun way to express feelings and ideas, helping them build emotional vocabulary and confidence.
What Students Will Learn in This 8‑Week Course
Reading Poems — Students learn how to approach short poems, notice patterns, and understand meaning.
Types of Poetry — From acrostics to shape poems, students explore forms that spark creativity.
Figures of Speech — They begin identifying simple devices like similes and onomatopoeia.
Sensory Details — Students learn how poets use the five senses to bring writing to life.
Rhythm and Rhyme — Through clapping, chanting, and reading aloud, students discover the musicality of poetry.

In short stories, we learned how to identify different parts of a story and the themes in the story. I enjoyed reading the short stories and found them quite interesting. In novel studies, I enjoyed reading the books and afterward having debates about topics in the book.
It was really fun when we did impromptu debates because we learned how to prepare a small speech on any topic in just a few minutes.
