Poetry Grade 3/4
A Grade 3–4 poetry course gives students the perfect balance of creativity and challenge. At this stage, learners are ready to explore deeper ideas, experiment with language, and begin shaping their own writing voice. Poetry becomes a tool for imagination, confidence, and stronger literacy — all while keeping learning joyful and expressive.
Why Poetry Matters for Grades 3–4
Growing Language Skills — Students expand vocabulary, explore descriptive language, and learn how poets use words with intention.
Creative Exploration — Poetry encourages students to take risks with ideas, imagery, and structure, helping them discover their unique style.
Stronger Reading Comprehension — Poems invite students to infer, interpret, and analyze — skills that strengthen overall reading ability.
Sensory and Emotional Awareness — Students learn to express feelings, describe experiences, and notice details in the world around them.
Confidence in Self‑Expression — Sharing and creating poems helps students develop a clear, confident voice.
What Students Will Learn in This 8‑Week Course
Reading Poems — Students learn how to interpret meaning, identify themes, and understand poetic structure.
Types of Poetry — They explore forms such as haiku, free verse, acrostics, and narrative poems.
Figures of Speech — Students identify similes, metaphors, personification, and onomatopoeia.
Sensory Details — They learn how poets use the five senses to create vivid imagery.
Rhythm and Rhyme — Students explore patterns, beats, and sound play to understand how poetry “moves.”
Composing Original Poems — Learners apply everything they’ve studied to craft their own creative pieces.
A list of craft supplies for hands‑on poetry activities will be uploaded to the classroom.

In short stories, we learned how to identify different parts of a story and the themes in the story. I enjoyed reading the short stories and found them quite interesting. In novel studies, I enjoyed reading the books and afterward having debates about topics in the book.
It was really fun when we did impromptu debates because we learned how to prepare a small speech on any topic in just a few minutes.
