Literary Essay ( Grade 7/8)
Please note that this class is different from the Essay Writing 101 course offered in Fall 2026. Students who did not take the Fall Course are welcome to join the Winter session.
In this 5‑week program, students will learn how to craft strong, insightful Literary Essays using a short story as their primary text. Through guided instruction and structured practice, students will:
Analyze a Short Story: Comment on key ideas, themes, character choices, and author techniques.
Develop a Clear Essay Topic: Support their ideas with relevant, well‑chosen facts and quotations from the text.
Use Precise Academic Language: Strengthen explanations with strong vocabulary and clear reasoning.
Maintain a Formal Writing Style: Build essays that sound polished, confident, and appropriate for academic work.
Apply Effective Transitions: Create cohesion and clarify relationships between ideas and paragraphs.
By the end of the course, students will be able to write a well-structured literary essay that presents a clear thesis, incorporates relevant textual evidence, and demonstrates strong analytical thinking.

In short stories, we learned how to identify different parts of a story and the themes in the story. I enjoyed reading the short stories and found them quite interesting. In novel studies, I enjoyed reading the books and afterward having debates about topics in the book.
It was really fun when we did impromptu debates because we learned how to prepare a small speech on any topic in just a few minutes.
