Novel Study

This 7-week course is designed to help students engage with literature.

About Underground to Canada:

Underground to Canada is a historical novel for young readers by Barbara Smucker. Based partially on a true story, it follows a young slave girl, Julilly, in the American South. When her master falls ill, she and her mother are separated. What follows is a thrilling story of Julilly's journey, as she tries to escape to Canada using the Underground Railroad.

The coursework emphasizes on strengthening the key literacy skills, such as comprehension and vocabulary.

At the same time, the students will develop a variety of skills, including:

  • Critical thinking: Students can analyze and make connections beyond the text through guided discussions and reflective prompts.

  • Cultural awareness: Students can gain insights into different perspectives and experiences by exploring characters from different cultures and historical periods.

  • Compassion: Students can build compassion by being exposed to different emotions, experiences, and environments.

In short stories, we learned how to identify different parts of a story and the themes in the story. I enjoyed reading the short stories and found them quite interesting. In novel studies, I enjoyed reading the books and afterward having debates about topics in the book.

It was really fun when we did impromptu debates because we learned how to prepare a small speech on any topic in just a few minutes.
