Novel Study (Grades 5/6) 

This 5-week course is designed to help students engage deeply with literature while developing essential literacy skills through the study of a compelling historical novel.

About Underground to Canada

Written by Barbara Smucker, Underground to Canada is a historical novel for young readers that is based in part on a true story. The novel follows Julilly, a young enslaved girl living in the American South. When her owner falls ill, Julilly is separated from her mother and sold away. What follows is a powerful and suspenseful journey as she seeks freedom in Canada through the Underground Railroad.

Course Focus

Through guided reading, discussion, and written activities, students will strengthen key literacy skills, including:

• Reading comprehension

• Vocabulary development

• Making inferences

• Analyzing characters and themes

• Responding to literature through discussion and writing

Skills Developed

Critical Thinking
Students will learn to make connections beyond the text through guided discussions and reflective activities.

Cultural Awareness
Students will gain a deeper understanding of different perspectives, cultures, and historical experiences by exploring the lives of characters from another time period.

Compassion and Empathy
By engaging with the emotions, challenges, and experiences of the characters, students will develop greater empathy and appreciation for the experiences of others.
