Reading Comprehension (Grades 5/6)
Strong reading comprehension skills help students understand, analyze, and connect with the texts they encounter every day. This course is designed to deepen students’ understanding of what they read by exploring writing style, vocabulary, and key literary devices.
Over five weeks, students will build the skills they need to read with confidence, think critically, and respond thoughtfully to a variety of texts.
What Students Will Learn
Analyzing Different Text Types: Students examine informational, graphic, and narrative texts to understand structure, purpose, and meaning.
Drawing Inferences: They learn to read between the lines and use clues from the text to form deeper insights.
Using Text Evidence: Students practice supporting their responses by quoting accurately and appropriately from the text.
Making Connections: They integrate their own knowledge and experiences with ideas in the reading to build stronger comprehension.

In short stories, we learned how to identify different parts of a story and the themes in the story. I enjoyed reading the short stories and found them quite interesting. In novel studies, I enjoyed reading the books and afterward having debates about topics in the book.
It was really fun when we did impromptu debates because we learned how to prepare a small speech on any topic in just a few minutes.
